What is Aurora Borealis?
Aurora borealis is a manufacturing process first invented by Swarovski* in 1956. The process involves adding a thin layer of gold to glass rhinestones. This forms a coating on the outside which resembles many gorgeous iridescent colours, much like that of the natural phenomena Aurora Borealis (which this process was named after).
The use of Aurora Borealis stones and beads in jewellery was immensely popular for ten years. It wasn’t until it the mid-1960s that it fell out of favour. In spite of this, like many aspects of fashion it soon had a huge resurgence in the later years of the last century.
* Swarovski remain one of the most prominent makers of fine rhinestones and Austrian crystals to date!
