Sparkly Vintage Necklace – Bezel Set with Rhinestones
A beautiful late 1950s, early 1960s sparkly vintage necklace. This is without a doubt one of the nicest examples of its kind!
This stunning vintage necklace features bezel set (open back) aurora borealis glass rhinestones. This style of setting allows light to pass through therefore giving a beautiful shine to the necklace. There are three larger clusters forming flower-like shapes, and two double-strand sections. This beautiful example fastens with a simple hook and chain closure.
Length (end-to-end) – 43cm
Widest part (front and bottom section) – 3.5cm
This necklace is in very good condition overall, though has some slight tarnishing to the back of the metalwork.
What is Aurora Borealis?
Aurora borealis is a manufacturing process first invented by Swarovski* in 1956. The process involves adding a thin layer of gold to glass rhinestones. This forms a coating on the outside which resembles many gorgeous iridescent colours, much like that of the natural phenomena Aurora Borealis (which this process was named after).
The use of Aurora Borealis stones and beads in jewellery was very popular until the mid 1960s, when it fell out of fashion. However, it had a huge resurgence in the later years of the last century when vintage jewellery collectors were drawn to the beauty of the style again!
* Swarovski is a maker of fine rhinestones and Austrian crystals still in business to this day
