What is Aurora Borealis?
Aurora borealis is a manufacturing process first invented by Swarovski* in 1956. The process involves adding a thin layer of gold to glass rhinestones. This forms a coating on the outside which resembles many gorgeous iridescent colours, much like that of the natural phenomena Aurora Borealis (which this process was named after).
The use of Aurora Borealis stones and beads in jewellery was very popular until the mid 1960s, when it fell out of fashion. However, it had a huge resurgence in the later years of the last century.
* Swarovski is a maker of fine rhinestones and Austrian crystals. They are still in business to this day!
